4 common ingredients found in best-selling lip balms (YUCK!):
Petrolatum. An oil-refining by-product that may contain carcinogens (depending on the refining process), petrolatum can create the illusion of hydrated skin while it in fact suffocates your pores. It merely creates a barrier so that moisture does not leave the skin. So while you might feel the instant gratification of a softened surface, you’re actually drying out the skin layers underneath by sealing out air and true moisture.
Mineral oil. This is another petroleum product that coats the skin like plastic wrap, preventing it from breathing, which can cause the skin to age prematurely.
Phenol, menthol, and camphor. These ingredients cool and anesthetize, but also aid in removing the lips’ protective layers of skin, causing drying, redness, and swelling. Phenol is also considered toxic to the central nervous system.
Lanolin. Although it’s considered a natural product, there is controversy around the way lanolin is produced. Sheep’s wool is dipped in pesticides to kill parasites/mites; it’s chemically scoured to remove the lanolin then put through a centrifuge. Next, it undergoes a distillation process, which yields the finished lanolin product. Toxic pesticide residues remain in the lanolin, a fact that has been well documented.

Our Ingredients and Your Pet:
Carnauba Wax is an all natural ingredient that is highly effective as a paw protectant because it has strong emollient properties, which means it helps to smooth out and soften skin. That provides comfort and relief to dogs and cats that are dealing with dry, chapped, and even cracked skin on their paws, snout, and elsewhere.
It is a durable wax so that means it will last a long time and hold up under some tough conditions, including heat.
Shea Butter contains a unique substance known as cinnamic acid, and cinnamic acid has natural antibacterial properties that help to ward off infection and speed up wound healing. Shea butter also contains naturally occurring vitamin A, which is known to speed up the recovery and regeneration of the skin.
Don’t worry if your pet licks some of it off of their paws - Shea butter is completely natural and is actually a healthy source of fat that has been used as a cooking oil in Africa for centuries. There’s no additives in Bennett Brothers Balm, so your dog or cat won’t get sick should he or she take a lick.
Coconut Oil can add moisture to your dog or cat’s skin and prevent flaking. It also helps freshen up a dog’s coat if used with a light touch. To use it topically, simply rub a very small amount of BBB onto your hands and then gently pat the coat, run your fingers through the fur, and massage a little down onto the skin. Since coconut oil can be given orally, you don’t have to worry if pets lick themselves after it’s been applied to their coats.
Kukui Nut Oil is a great additive for any solution aimed at being a dry snout remedy. Many dogs are exposed to increased risk of having a dry and cracked snout. When they do, they will need some type of dry dog nose treatment as a way to bring relief and healing.
Vitamin E helps to soothe irritations and speed recovery as well, while the multitude of essential fatty acids keep the skin healthy, elastic, and better prepared to heal itself should the need arise.
