Very proud and honored to have been selected as the top Middle Level Honoree from MA for The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards 2018! Thank you to my Principal for nominating me and to the committee for choosing me. I hope that this recognition will shine a light on the urgent need to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research! Congratulations to all of the winners, finalists and student volunteers everywhere!…/2…/ma/harrison-harry-bennett

BOSTON, Feb. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Kira Andreucci, 17, of Fitchburgand Harrison (Harry) Bennett, 12, of Malden today were named Massachusetts' top two youth volunteers of 2018 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. As State Honorees, Kira and Harry each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and an all-expense-paid trip in late April to Washington, D.C., where they will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for four days of national recognition events. During the trip, 10 students will be named America's top youth volunteers of 2018.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, now in its 23rd year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

These are Massachusetts' top youth volunteers of 2018:

High School State Honoree: Kira Andreucci
Nominated by Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg

Kira, a junior at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School, provides backpacks filled with food to more than 225 children every Friday during the school year to keep them from going hungry over the weekend. When Kira was in the fifth grade, she saw a child taking food out of a recycling bin at her school. This touched something deep in Kira, who was adopted from China by her American family when she was 17 months old and who, her parents believe, often went hungry during the early months of her life. She and her father did some research and learned that one in five children go to bed hungry. "I wanted to do something to help children who are less fortunate than me," said Kira.

She first met with her principal and presented her idea of providing a backpack full of nutritious, nonperishable food on Fridays to 10 children the school deemed most in need. After the principal agreed, she asked her family for money instead of gifts for her birthday, then bought food items and began filling and delivering her "kidpacks." That was over seven years ago; Kira's program now has expanded to all four of her town's elementary schools plus children enrolled in a local Head Start program. To raise money for her food packs, Kira solicits donations through a blog and Facebook page, organizes fundraisers and applies for grants. To stretch her donations, Kira clips coupons and buys in bulk. Then she and a team of 10 volunteers pack the kidpacks and deliver them to schools for distribution on Fridays. Her group also collects Christmas gifts and Easter baskets for the children, and provides food to some of their families over the summer.

Middle Level State Honoree: Harry Bennett
Nominated by St. Joseph School in Medford

Harry, a seventh-grader at St. Joseph School, created a nonprofit organization with his younger brother to produce a line of all-natural lip and body balm products that they sell to support Hodgkin's lymphoma research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. When Harry's friend Timmy was diagnosed with Hodgkin's in May of 2016, Harry "couldn't believe that someone so young, active and healthy could have cancer." He immediately wanted to do something to raise money, but also help his friend feel better during his arduous chemotherapy treatments. "I had heard that cancer patients' lips and skin can get very dry from treatments, so I thought making a lip balm would be a great idea," Harry said.

So, with the help of their family, the Bennett brothers began researching ingredients, testing recipes and hand-producing all-natural, vegan and chemical-free lip and body balm products. A family friend, who is a graphic designer, created a logo for their brand, called "Bennett Brothers Balm." Then they designed labels and packaging, and their parents helped them set up a website and social media accounts. Next, Harry and his brother were ready to start marketing. Most of their sales are made at craft shows and special events, such as 5K races and cancer fundraisers; the products are also available at a local salon, a yoga studio and on Etsy. So far, Bennett Brothers Balm has raised more than $4,200 to help find a cure for Hodgkin's lymphoma. "We felt this work was important because friends help friends," said Harry. "It's just what you do."

We just came across this article now (it was written by Dr. Ospino in February of last year!) while we were searching for something else online. I can't believe we missed it! It is beautifully written and brought us right back to that incredible moment in time!

We want to say again how grateful we are to the SJS community for making that day such a memorable one for all of us. It would not have happened if Ms. Foley hadn't nominated the boys, and Ms. Nicole Malizia Sullo hadn't recommended that she do so!

If you have a chance, please read this. It's a lovely reminder that St. Joseph School Medford is a truly special place. ðŸ’œ

-The Bennett Family

The following article was contributed by Hosffman Ospino, PhD, Director of Graduate Programs in Hispanic Ministry at Boston College – School of Theology and Ministry.

Heath and Harry Bennett
Grades: 2 and 6
Ages: 7 and 11
St. Joseph School, Medford, MA
Archdiocese of Boston

Heath and Harry were inspired to create Bennett Brothers Balm when their friend Timmy was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May 2016. They wanted to raise money for cancer research and to create a product that would help his skin feel better after the chemo treatments. The entire idea and promotion of the balm lotion was Heath and Harry’s. Their mom and dad helped with the stirring of the ingredients and supervising the pouring of hot liquids. The lip and body balm is a popular local and online seller and 100% of the proceeds go to cancer research.

Dr. Hosffman Ospino, NCEA Board of Directors member, presented the NCEA Youth Virtues, Valor, Vision Award to the brothers Heath and Harry Bennett. It was a beautiful celebration that began with the Eucharistic celebration.

The entire St. Joseph School community was present for the conferral of the award. I was honored to meet the Bennett brothers and their parents as well as the teachers and staff who have created a great environment for Catholic values to become life in ways that are truly life-giving. Mayor Burke of Medford, MA was present along with Timmy Corcoran and his family. In her brief remarks she highlighted the importance of the school and the example of the two brothers to the construction of a better society.

There is no doubt that this award is an affirmation of the incredible value of Catholic education. At the same time, the award is a way to inspire the students who attend our Catholic schools to truly be women and men for others —as my Jesuit colleagues regularly say.

At the more personal level, the experience was profoundly enriching. In the short time I shared with the St. Joseph School community, I was drawn into what I would call a sacramental moment. There is no doubt that God was present, especially in the celebration of the Eucharist and the proclamation of the Word. Celebrating our faith together set the tone. But God was also present in the little actions that revealed the love the teachers have for their students, the sense of pride of young and old at witnessing two of its members being lifted for embodying the best of their shared convictions, and the hope that only the looks and smiles drawn on the face of children can inspire. This experience reminded me of the Catholic school that my children attend and the reasons for which I would choose Catholic education again and again.

The visit has motivated me to continue to advocate to make sure that as many as possible school-age Catholics, almost two thirds Hispanic, are educated in our Catholic schools. I can easily see many of the 8 million school-age Hispanic Catholics in the country at this point in history being lifted like the Bennett brothers for bringing their faith to life with the support of an entire school community that shares their values. They just need to opportunity to do that.

It was such a special moment for the whole school community. Harry addressed the group on behalf of him and his brother Heath.  His words touched all of us as he shared that a close family friend, Courtney Lynne Jones, just lost her battle with cancer just days earlier.  There wasn’t a dry eye among the adults when he dedicated their award to her and pledged to continue their work to fight for cancer research in her honor and memory.  He said, ” To all those still fighting, we will do everything we can to help find a cure. We will never give – because NO ONE fights alone.”

Deirde Foley – It is our hope at SJS that this recognition can increase Harry and Heath’s great efforts to raise funds to further Hodgkin lymphoma research at Dana-Farber. The boys truly represent what we are called to do as Catholics, that is to serve others in need.  Their service helps to remind all of us of the words of Pope Francis, “The life of Jesus is a life for others.  It is a life of service.”

Christmas is almost here and we just received the best present! We are so excited to share this news with you! The 1 Million 4 Anna Foundation's "Anna's Closet" provides small teen gifts, giving patients a "prize" for every poke they receive in the cancer/blood disorders clinic. Their goal – put a smile on the face of a teen going through cancer treatment. And now Bennett Brothers Balm will be one of those small gifts!

With 20 Closets operating in children’s hospitals in 10 states throughout the US, this is such a wonderful opportunity for us to get our Balm to the very people it was originally made for! Children with cancer. ðŸ’œ

We are so honored to be associated with the 1 Million 4 Anna Foundation, and we thank them for believing in us and supporting our shared cause! Raising funds and awareness for Pediatric Cancer!

Thank you to our friend, Jen Caruso of Swirls Around the World for posting about 1 Million 4 Anna during their 12:12 campaign and bringing the Foundation to our attention. Please check out both of these amazing organizations when you have a chance!

Have a Blessed Holiday Season and a Very Merry Christmas! XO

Much Love,
The Bennett Family

"The 1 Million 4 Anna Foundation was founded in January 2012. But we began long before that. After Anna was diagnosed with Ewing’s in November 2009, many of us found ourselves searching something to do or some way to help. Initially, we found that the best thing we could do for Anna was to pray for her. With that in mind, the idea for 1 Million 4 Anna was born. People pledged to pray for Anna daily at 12:12 PM, a time selected because of Romans 12:12 which says “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” ðŸ’œðŸ™ðŸ’œ

A few weeks ago we donated a box of Balm to our friend, Ray O'Brien, an amazing human who runs Children Are Angels From Heaven, an organization dedicated to helping profoundly disadvantaged children pursue productive and meaningful lives. Today we received this message from Ray re: our shipment of Bennett Brothers Balm and we would like to share it with you! Ray was very disappointed that the Balm did not arrive in time for him to personally deliver it, but it DID finally arrive and we are so excited!!! Our Balm traveled from Boston, to NY, to Dublin, Ireland, to Switzerland to Mumbai, to Calcutta, to it's final destination in Rourkela!!! How cool is that!!!

Much Love to Ray and everyone involved in getting our Balm to India. We wish him safe travels home to Medford! ðŸ’œðŸ’œðŸ’œ

PS: We will be sure to share photos with you when we are able.

Hi Harry and Heath,

I received a telephone call early this morning in Kolkata >>>>The Balm has arrived in Rourkela today!

I have given the Daughters of the Cross Sisters instructions what to do....

Everything will work out now, the only problem is, the photos will all be mailed to me in Medford by Registered mail when everything is given away....then I will give them to you to see...I hope this is ok with you ??? I also hope that you have looked at the tracking of the Balm, it sure has traveled to many places!

Don't worry, God will look after us and the project will be completed soon.

Thank You for your help.

I leave for home Fri night. If you have any questions please call me when I get back.

Hi Friends! Bennett Brothers Balm has some exciting news to share! Due to some quality issues we were experiencing with our tins, we decided to upgrade the packaging of our Original Lip Balm and our Tummy Troubles! The new containers are Polypropylene Plastic (PP), which is not only safe and highly durable, but also fully recyclable with a low environmental impact. We care very much about producing a high quality product that you will love and want to buy again and again, while also being kind to the planet and your wallet. Since Tummy Troubles is such a special, unique product for us, we wanted it to stand on its own next to our Original Balm, so we gave it a new container and doubled the volume. These little jars will now cost $10 for 1.2 OZ of product. Our Lip Balm will remain at $5. Thanks for your support and we hope you will love our new packaging as much as we do! ðŸ’œ #bennettbrothersbalm#danafarber #jimmyfund

Last night was truly inspiring. To be surrounded by hundreds of caregivers, advocates, volunteers and philanthropists all with the same goal in their minds and hearts was amazing and energizing.
Jonathan Kraft spoke and he said something that resonated with us - one philanthropist can't raise or donate all of the funds to support this cause...not one single caregiver can give all the care or do all of the research and not one volunteer can be everywhere and help everyone...but together we can. Every single one of us matters. That is an awesome message for the boys (for all of us) to carry with them throughout their lives. Never feel like you're too young or too small or that your contribution doesn't matter. It all matters. Every single little bit. YOU matter.

So give of yourself...and teach those you love to give of themselves too!

"No one has ever become poor from giving."

Hi Friends! We thought you might like to see what our feedback was from our E for All Pitch Contest entry! It's pretty cool to read what people think about our business idea and it makes us very excited for the future of Bennett Brothers Balm:) -Harry & Heath

Reader1: Ideas that are born out of a personal experience have that special ingredient, passion. You definitely have created something out of wanting to help and comfort your friend through his cancer treatments. I admire what you are doing. As you are students and ages 11 and 7, I would like to know who is guiding and helping you? It sounds like if this is FDA approved you will have many more outlets to sell your products. Who will be presenting these products to hospitals and other facilities? I am sure you have grown and learned a lot...and I can only imagine in a few years all that you will know about growing a business and selling products. Where do you hope to be in the next 5 years?

Reader2: Dear Harry and Heath, Thank you for your application to the EforAll Lowell-Lawrence All Ideas Pitch Contest. This is an absolutely wonderful idea and business! The social mission is powerful. It's so impressive that you've developed this and you're only 7 and 11. There are tons of programs and opportunities for young entrepreneurs, so definitely keep at this. I'm definitely recommending you to Pitch. Be sure to reach out to the staff at EforAll for support if you need.

Reader3: You are such an inspiration! What great friends you are! I hope you continue with this effort and are able to raise lots of money for Dana-Farber. Good luck!

Reader4: This is the greatest idea I have heard in a while. This idea has that special element of passion and love in the product. Any idea with a cause really changes the game. I would suggest to see if you could partner with big box stores as a specialty product.

Hi Friends!

Last night we attended Dana-Farber's Donor Appreciation Night at Fenway Park, which included dinner in the Champions Club followed by the Sox vs. Orioles game!

Dana-Farber presented us with the "Young Entrepreneurs" award, a brand new category that they created JUST FOR US!!! We were SO PROUD and honored (and surprised - we had no idea!) to accept this award.

We had so much fun - there was great food (Fenway Franks! Chicken fingers! Cookies!), a speaker, a ceremony, and then we got to see the Sox beat the Orioles (much to our dad's dismay - he's an Orioles fan)!

Thanks to all of you for supporting Bennett Brothers Balm and our efforts to raise money for children's cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. They are doing amazing work there and we are so proud to be a part of it!

SO PROUD to have recieved DFCI's "Young Entrepeneurs Award" - created just for us!!

Wednesday, August 24, 2016

Hi Friends!

We wanted to tell you a little bit about our trip to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute today! We met with Brenda Goodell and Julie Wood - they oversee all of the fundraising for DFCI and the Jimmy Fund. They were so nice and took us on a great tour.

Some things we learned:

*Dana-Farber raised 250 MILLION dollars last year through philanthropy - are WE philanthropists??? Heath and I hope to see our names on their walls one day!!!

*Every dollar of funds raised at the Pan-Mass Challenge goes DIRECTLY to Dana-Farber. Last year they raised 45 MILLION DOLLARS! This is so cool - our parents are hoping to ride next year!

*The Red Sox and Dana-Farber have the longest charitable relationship in all of professional sports. Owners Tom and Jean Yawkey named the Jimmy Fund the team's official charity in 1953.

Some things we really liked:

The Zebrafish Wall (who knew we shared DNA with FISH!?), the "Human-Nature" leaf sculpture in the lobby, the nature gardens, the kids names spray painted on the beams that you can see through the windows from the children's wing and the PMC Bridge.

We need YOU!

We hope that you will continue to support Bennett Brothers Balm and our efforts to raise money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute - it is truly an amazing place and we are so proud to be a part of what they are doing to help our friend Timmy get better.

Thanks again and we love you all!!!!

xoxo Harry & Heath

Here we are presenting our very first donation to Julie and Brenda!
